Living Like a Traveler, Traveling While Living: Tips for Travelers and Locals by Yumi Matsumoto

Yumi Matsumoto is a social media content creator, writer, translator and Helsinki Guide. She was the first to stay in St. George Literature Residency in October 2025 and now shares her travel tips with us – both in English and Japanese for those of us who prefer experiencing a new city through the eyes of a local.

You might have heard the phrase “live like a local while traveling.” Slightly different from that, I have enjoyed Helsinki and Finland like a traveler while living here for last 17 years. It’s about being curious about exploring what’s around you and what’s happening in everyday life. If I were to lose that curiosity or traveler’s mindset, life could become less interesting. There is enough space for everyone —locals and visitors, to breathe and their own space in Helsinki though it’s the busiest city in Finland.

I wondered what I could suggest for travelers who would like to “live like a local” while visiting Helsinki, and locals who would like to have tips to enjoy the city with traveler’s mindset. Here are my suggestions for both visitors and locals:

Visit a café—or several

You might want to start your morning by visiting a café or taking a coffee break at any time of the day. Finland ranks number one in coffee consumption per capita —12 kg per person annually. Even without looking at the data, you’ll notice that people drink a lot of coffee. Though it’s often said, “if you would like to know Finnish culture and people, visit sauna” and it’s true, I think visiting cafes is also a great way to get to know Finnish culture and people. Try filtered coffee to begin with, perhaps with “pulla” (“A sweet, leavened baked good made of wheat and flavored with crushed cardamom, resembling very soft bread in consistency, eaten in Finland,” according to the Wikipedia). Look around, you’ll often find regulars who know the best things to order. Even though small talk isn’t Finnish cup of tea, try to talk with the owner or staff of small cafes. You never know!

Visit museums and cultural events

Out of the many museums in Helsinki, my favorites are Ateneum, Amos Rex, Kunsthalle Helsinki, Kiasma and Sinebrychof museum. We are blessed with an abundance of world-class exhibitions. After enjoying art, browsing museum shops add more joy to the visit. Especially the gift shop at Kiasma is a great place to feel inspired and find gifts for yourself, your family, or friends. Don’t forget about museum cafes and restaurants — Kiasma café and Ateneum Bistro are my favorites, especially for lunch. Both places offer tasty, nutritious and affordable meals. Seasonal public events such as Lux Helsinki and Night of Arts are free of charge, and you can see amazing things for free. Check Helsinki’s event calendar and don’t miss out if you’re lucky enough to be in town during these events.

Embrace colors of the seasons

Cherry blossoms in spring, autumn leaves, the intense light of summer, and darkness and white snow in winter — there are different things to enjoy in each season. Walk to the seaside to see the sunset, moonrise or even northern lights. I especially like to watch the moonrise when it’s full. The seaside around Kaivopuisto park is my favorite place to see the full moon rise, and the hill of the observatory in Kaivopuisto park is my usual spot to look for northern lights.

Visit Finnish forests

Nuuksio national park is a great place and accessible by public transport. I hadn’t been an outdoor person, but last summer I discovered the joy of being in the national park. My favorite place to start nature walks is Haltia Nature Center. There are restaurants, a shop, outdoor gear rental, bathrooms and bus stop right in front. You might want to spend time looking at the exhibition at the nature center to get familiar with nature all over Finland as well as exploring Nuuksio.

Design and architecture are also unmissable in Finland

You don’t necessarily have to go to seek out designs and architecture sites. They’re everywhere and part of daily life. That said, it’s still worth visiting Oodi, Helsinki’s state-of-art central library, and Finlandia Hall, designed by Alvar Aalto about 50 years ago, recently renovated and reopened to the public at the beginning of 2025.

Try dinner at one of the classic restaurants in the town

Several restaurants offer authentic and tasty classic Finnish dishes. For example, Restaurant Kannas has been around since 1939 and has an extensive menu. Homemade sausage, salmon soup, fish plate, pepper steak and more —everything locals love is on the menu. My favorite is house salad when I want vegetables and protein, and grilled liver, which is heavy but delicious. I also recommend iced cranberries with caramel sauce. The combination of cold, sour cranberries and warm, bitter caramel create perfect harmony in your mouth. The casual atmosphere and the friendly and efficient staff of the restaurant welcome everyone— travelers and locals alike. Another restaurant I highly recommend is Kosmos with history dating back to 1924. Its classical European restaurant impressed me with the beautiful décor, polite and professional services, and classic cloakroom when I entered. Its classic atmosphere made me feel that I was in the right place.

Writing about all that Helsinki offers, I realized there are so many things visitors and locals could enjoy. What I wrote is not all, but I hope this article gives you a bit more inspiration to explore and enjoy Helsinki.
